George VI 1937 Coronation Chair and Stool

A George VI 1937 Coronation chair and stool designed by Edward Barnsley for the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, London on 12th May 1937.

The chairs for the coronation of King George VI were made of limed oak and were upholstered in a green velvet or velour material.

The backrest of the chair is monogrammed with the monarch’s initials and a crown embroidered on the front. Both the chair and stool are finished in gold braid banding.

The chair has been hand-numbered with the initials ‘DG’ and the digit ’17’ which is a very low number for the coronation so this pair would almost have certainly been in the first rows of seats within Westminster Abbey.  Both the chair and stool are stamped with the ‘GRVI CORONATION’ on the underside and both retain the original webbing used by the makers B. North & Sons, West Wycombe.  The stool with original metal slot brackets underneath.

This particular pair is rarer than those made by W. Hands & Sons, which when found, are the more common maker of the 1937 coronation chair and stool.

After the coronation of George VI in 1937, it was decided to sell off some of the chairs and stools that the guests had used and they were offered for sale with first refusal given to the people who had occupied the seat at the ceremony. They offered a unique and lasting souvenir of such a great occasion.

Both the chair and stool are offered in wonderful condition with age-related marks and scuffs to the velvet.
