A fabulous near pair of 19th century occasional tables with mahogany tops accompanied with a cast iron base.
The circular stepped top is attached to a brass pole with a clasp underneath that allows the top to rise and fall to the desired height.
The brass pole is attached to a heavy duty brass outer column with vertical reeded decoration ending on a bulbus cast base.
Each table is supported by a heavy cast base with ball and claw feet, finished on oversized brass castors.
This pair of tables were used in an English university by lecturers during teaching. The height would have been adjusted whilst the user was presenting on a raised platform to students.
A rare survivor, reassuringly heavy and of excellent quality.
Price is for the pair.
English, circa 1870.
